Q: Hey Gina, I have a question for you. I am going to start Bikram Yoga and I know it uses lots of strenght and stamina, but how does it fall into a program?? it’s not consider strenght or cardio so I guess its an addition right?
A: Great questions and I am excited for you to start yoga! If you are not doing a “challenge” typically 2-3 days a week is a great addition to your weight training program. It definitely uses strength, physical and mental, but I wouldn’t suggest you totally replace it for your training. It is definitely a different type of workout, which you will see. You will definitely get a great sweat!!! I would say to train 3-4x/week, yoga 2-3x/week and cardio 3-4x week is a great balance. That is a great place to start and you can see how you respond. Some people start to lose weight right away with the yoga and can back down on cardio but everyone is different. Because Yoga is a different type of working out or cardio training, I would suggest you incorporate all 3 elements (yoga, training and cardio) but adjust it how you see fit and how you feel. Definitely on Yoga days, I would stick to just yoga and weights or yoga alone but not cardio too. Just go with how you feel and see who you like your new addition to your plan. Keep me posted as I am really interested to see how you like it. Remember there are SO many benefits to yoga so stick with it. It does take time to get use to and is very different than your typical type of training but mind over matter. Yoga is a great way to build your mental strength and exercise your mind so stick with it!! You will gain SO much physical AND mental strength! 🙂
I am excited for you! Enjoy and remember to stay hydrated!!
Enjoy and Namaste! 🙂
