First of all, what is success? Webster describes success as:
1. obsolete : outcome, result
2. degree or measure of succeeding b : favorable or desired outcome; also : the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence
3. one that succeeds
What an ambiguous word?? What is success to you? Now, let’s discuss the fear of “success”.
Fear of success can be just as scary as having a fear of failure. People can fear success because they are being faced to test their limits and face their flaws! Success involves changing from A to B and you know how scary change is! We all often try to avoid it and have to push ourselves to experiment outside of our box! Success can be intimidating and hard to handle. With success comes more challenges and responsibilities – and that can be threatening.
For example, your weight loss success, maybe you see it as something you have to uphold now and aren’t sure if you can or if it is reasonable! It is also scary when people all notice success and then you feel pressure that you have to live up to it. Here is where you have to ask yourself, am I doing this for me or someone else!
If you are doing it for you, you will adapt perfectly but if you are doing it for someone else, you will start to resent success and be in fear. On another note, if you have lived your whole life, not believing in yourself, when you actually get to where you thought you would never get, it is scary! you almost can’t believe it and it is a scary thought that you did it, you got there, you are making things happen, You are that person you never thought you were!
Sometimes people fear success because they don’t know if they can live up to their achievements. They don’t think they’re good enough or smart enough. They’re afraid they don’t have what it takes to rise to the challenge, and they don’t know if they can sustain their success.
Maybe it is the fear that you will accomplish all that you set out to, but that you still won’t be happy, once you reach your goal. Do you feel worthy of your success and accomplishments and know that you deserve all that you have put in to get there?
Are you afraid that now that you have all this approval, you fear making mistakes and the bar that you have to live up to is much higher??
What about the belief in your own ability to maintain your progress, and the accomplishments you have achieved in your life
Do you fear that you can easily fall back into your old ways and diminish your accomplishments at any moment??
Do you belief that there are others out there who are better than you, who will replace or displace you if you do not maintain your goals?
Do you fear that once you have achieved the goals you have worked so hard for, your motivation will fade and you will wonder what is next???
First step is: You first need to identify the fear of success in your life. Remember, it is important to be sure you are doing things for you and not someone else!
Step two is to be sure you see the big picture and with the end in mind… SO imagine you have the body you want, you feel amazing, are successful in several areas of your life, that vision you had when you started, well… now you have it, NOW WHAT….? Plan ahead so you always have things to strive for, once you reach your goals!!
Everyday we are all a success. Could fear of success actually holding you back? Who would of thought, fear of success may be holding you back…
Remember, what is one person’s success does not equate to your personal success! We are all a success and OUR personal “success” lies within us and our journey from point A to point B! Fear no more, dig deep to find within yourself where your fear may be stemming, know you are not alone and let’s tackle our deepest fears!

thanks for this post gina
i totally understand the fear of success – i can relate to this 100% – you know that job change we discussed a while back. Well at some point i totally want to focus my attention to my business 100% but given some of our financial obligations – i cannot justify this at this time. so i decided to look for a new job – as you know i am not happy with my current employer so i decided to submit my resume to a larger firm that has more opportunities for growth of course with that comes more responsibilities. I had an interview yesterday. It went well and I still don’t know if they will offer me the position but i left that interview with such a strange feeling. when i say strange i mean that I felt scared. I preach that change is good and i know this but when i left i couldn’t help but feel some of the things that you posted today. Fear of change, fear of success, fear of living up to my and their expectations.
I am much better today and i know that i need to face these fears in order to progress in my career but it’s easy to fall back into that safety net. I guess in a way i am also afraid to commit myself 100% to my side business – but for now I believe that changing this part of my career is the right step at this time.
anyway – i can totally relate and you continue to inspire me

We fear the pressure put on us but more than that the pressure to live up to our own expectations. Your right, Jenn, facing these fear will only bring you further along your career. Looking back, when you are successful in your own business, you will chuckle at the fear you once had… but in the moment it is scary!! Follow your heart and sounds like you are!
