Q:
I’ve noticed that you never (or fairly rarely) use salt. Is this just from a sodium standpoint? The reason why I ask is because I do cook with sea salt just because I like the way it brings out the flavor of a LOT of foods.
And here’s a very weird thing. I have always drunk a lot of water. I find that even at a gallon plus a day I still am thirsty sometimes. Somebody suggested to me once that my electrolytes might be a little off and to add some sea salt to my water. I do this sometimes (or add ElectroMix) and I’m not nearly as thirsty on those days. I also notice that on the days I don’t add any salt to my food I’m a little thirstier as well. Does this sound right?
Basically my question is is it okay to have some salt or do you suggest getting rid of salt? The sea salt is also much lower in sodium than regular table salt. Just curious. Thanks!

Great question. I never have used salt in my life so that is why I am not use to it and don’t cook with it. Believe it or not, growing up, we never even had a salt shaker! Even today, we don’t have one. I actually bought some Sea Salt to have for guests. We had a couple over once who asked for salt and that is when I realized OMG, we don’t have salt!! Kind of funny… I do have and use garlic salt, on occasion. There are a few recipes that I feel may need a little touch, mashed potatoes or even the cauliflower mashed needs it sometimes, unless you add cheese. But other than that, I have never gotten into the habit of using salt.
Now to answer your questions…
-I don’t use it because I never have but also now that I have gone SO long without using it, my body is SO sensitive to it.
– Really not sure about you feeling less thirst on the days you add the salt but you should be even thirstier. Putting salt in your water is not the answer. You may have a slight imbalance from using too much salt. Maybe it is a deficiency in Potassium..? Make sure you are taking a solid multi-vitamin, daily.
-I would stray away from getting in the habit of using it all the time, especially putting it in your water!
-Salt is not the best thing for you but if you use it in a few recipes here and there, it isn’t going to kill you. I would recommend Sea Salt, as you already use.
-Salt is an acquired taste so give yourself 2 weeks off and then when you try anything salty you will cringe! 2 weeks and you can be salt free… give it a try!
-Learning to use less can take time and flexibility, but use herbs and spices to help enhance the flavor of your foods!
-Try cooking with more herbs and spices. I know it may taste bland at first, but I promise 2 weeks and you will then start to taste the delicious flavor of your foods, without the salt!!
Keep me posted!
