Q: are all protein powders basically the same? do some absorb more? how do i know which to buy? i’m so confused on this subject!
A:Great question! It is best to find a protein that is about
120-130 calories/scoop
less than 3 g of fat/scoop
less than 4g carbs/scoop
less than 2g sugar/scoop
and between 20-25g protein/scoop
You have to watch out for high levels of sodium and cholesterol. Yes, believe it or not there is cholesterol in so many protein powders.
Whey is an easily digested protein and casein is a slower digesting/time released protein. You can find a strictly whey or casein or a blend of the two.
Whey (or a blend) is best for post workout and Casein is best for before bedtime or, as I have mentioned, you can add a fat to the whey to slow down the absorption.
Really, as long as you find a protein powder within those ranges above, it is all about the way it tastes and mixes. When you find one you like, stick with it. My favorite and so many on the board would agree is Biotest’s Metabolic Drive.
You may have to try a few before you find one you like the flavor and texture of but you eventually will. 🙂
Isopure is also a great pure whey isolate but it is a bit more watery and not as thick as the Biotest’s which is a blend of casein and whey.
Hope that helps and let me know if you have specific questions as you continue on your search…
