Q: Gina, What’s the difference between balsamic vinegar and balsamic vinaigrette? I hear the vinaigrette is not the best option, what do you think?? Is vinaigrette Gina Approved?
A: Great question and this is one that people get confused about. The straight balsamic and the vinaigrette dressing are completely different and one is GA and the other depends but most likely is not GA. They are two VERY different things. Plain balsamic vinegar typically has very few calories (10 – 20 a tablespoon) and no fat. Balsamic vinaigrette often contains fat and a lot more calories, since it’s usually made with some type of oil and other high-calorie ingredients like sugar, cheese, etc. There are some that are lower in fats but typically they are cream based and high in fat, sugar and calories. A typical serving of 2 tbsp usually has around 80 – 110 calories and 8 – 12g fat per 2-tbsp. serving!
Your best bet is to stick with the basic balsamic vinegar (oil and vinegar on the side) or use any other vinegar such as red wine or apple cider vinegar. Keep in mind, most restaurants don’t comprehend, “Oil and Vinegar on the side, please.” Usually they will come with the Vinaigrette. Be sure to specify Plain Oil and Vinegar. Remember, a clear, healthy and low calorie salad can turn into a diet disaster with the addition of a heavy high calorie dressing… Great question!
