Q: Just wondering if you wear a heart rate monitor during your cardio sessions? I have just started and I am burning around 380cals in 40 mins in incline treadmill. Just wondering whether this is lame :-)
Thanks!
A: Great question and one that gets asked a lot. Personally I do not wear a heart rate monitor but this is NOT lame. I would focus more on your heart rate than calories burned. You know me, not much of a numbers person… I believe that heart rate monitors are great motivators and all relative. You can measure your workout intensity, based on numbers from one day to another but I do not believe that the calories burned are always accurate. If one day you do the same workout (incline treadmill 4% at 4.5mph) and burn X amount of calories and the next day, you do the same workout and burn more than X amount of calories, you know that you pushed yourself a little more. It is not silly to wear a heart rate monitor, for sure! Everyone has their preference and different things that motivate them! If watching the calories climb motivates you to dig deep, go for it.
Another reason to wear a heart rate monitor is to gauge your heart rate (go figure). If you want to keep yourself within a range, it is a great way to track that, without taking your pulse. Maybe even during interval training, to see the jump up of your heart rate. If you are wanting to stay within a “fat burning” range of 130-145 vs. reaching a percentage of your target heart rate (65% or 85%)
Heart rate monitors are a personal preference and choice. As for me not much of a numbers person, go with how I feel and listen to my body but some people need that visual, which is perfectly fine and great!!
Way to burn those calories and use your HR monitor to keep you going!!
