Does collagen powder replace another protein powder such as whey or casein?
While it’s amazing and definitely a GREAT addition to your nutrition, NO it does not.
Let me explain…
First off — YES! It’s true that collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies! Collagen is what gives our bones, connective tissue, ligaments, tendons and skin structure.
Supplementing with collagen provides plenty of benefits to the body— BUT collagen doesn’t behave in the same way in the body as whey or other protein powders.
Protein Powders vs Collagen Supplements
Collagen is not a source of dietary protein. Dietary protein is the kind of protein that you consume to balance your blood sugar and keep you feeling fuller for longer. Complete protein sources contain all 9 essential amino acids. Essential meaning we must get them from our diet.  They help us build muscle and fuel metabolic functions. A complete-protein supplement is a daily essential for those of us who are aiming to be sure we get in enough to ensure to support our health and goals.
Collagen contains a different spectrum of amino acids and is lower in essential amino acids that we cannot make, but is higher in some (glycine, proline and hydroxyproline), amino acids that are required to properly build collagen, providing strength and structure to our body. Think- gorgeous nails and skin- YES!
In other words, the benefits of collagen come from a unique spectrum of amino acids that offer its own, unique benefits throughout the body but not ALL.
Collagen Benefits…
Anti-aging benefits -think Glowing Skin. You may know that collagen production starts to decline in your 20s. But did you know that by age 60, you have half as much collagen as you did when you were 21? Good news — collagen supplementation has been shown to improve skin’s texture, moisture and elasticity. Bring it on!
Joint Health. So many people suffer from arthritis and joint issues. Supplementing with collagen can help to boost cellular repair and even stimulate the growth of new joint cartilage.
Support your active body.  Your connective tissue is what supports your muscles. Collagen supplementation improves your connective tissues, supporting your active muscles. It can decrease recovery time from injury because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant support.
Improve your bone mineral density. Collagen has been found to support healthy bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. Those going through menopause Collagen is your superpower!
Improve cardiovascular function. Collagen peptides have been shown to support cardiovascular function.
Improve everyday life! Collagen has been shown to improve energy and overall well being making you live a better, happier, fitter life!
Which do I recommend??
Make sure the collagen you choose is from a clean and sustainable source. Grass-fed/pasture-raised and contains NO hormones or if it is marine collagen, coming from wild-caught (not farmed) sea animals.
Make sure the collagen is hydrolyzed (broken down into smaller peptides to help your body use them properly.
Simply add a scoop of collagen (typically around 10 grams)  to your teas, protein shakes and enjoy all the amazing benefits collagen has to offer your body, hair, skin, nails and so much more!
